On Saturday, May 31, a record 1,624 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools students were given free athletic screenings at Atrium Health’s seventh annual Heart of a Champion Day.
The screenings included heart checks to spot possible hereditary conditions that could lead to sudden cardiac death. More than 100 student-athletes had medical issues that needed further investigation, including 10 possible cardiac issues. In addition to heart checks, orthopedic and general medical screenings were provided.
