The majority of gastrointestinal cancers are called colorectal cancer and occur in the colon (which is the last 6 feet of the large intestine) and rectum (which is the last 6 inches of the colon).
Gastrointestinal cancer treatment
To ensure you receive the most effective care, our team of radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists, pathologists and other specialists works together to develop an individualized treatment plan for the best outcome possible. Collaborating twice a month, our experts gather to discuss each patient’s case, sharing treatment recommendations.
Several treatment options are available for patients with GI cancer, depending on factors such as your overall health and cancer location. In many cases, surgery is the best option for GI cancer and is often followed by chemotherapy or radiation therapy, such as proton beam therapy.
Proton therapy now available for GI cancer
Levine Cancer is the first and only program in the Carolinas with proton beam therapy, an advanced type of radiation therapy.
For some patients with GI cancer, proton therapy offers a powerful advantage: it precisely targets tumors with less damage to healthy tissue.
That means fewer side effects, a lower risk of long-term complications and a better quality of life during and after treatment.
