At Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute's Vascular Medicine Program, we provide a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to improve how patients with vascular disease are diagnosed and treated. They also refer to appropriate surgical specialists when necessary.

- Pulmonary Embolism Response Team: A multidisciplinary team focused on optimizing pulmonary embolism diagnosis and treatment. The team includes experts from areas such as:
- Vascular medicine

- Cardiac surgery
- Interventional cardiology

- Multidisciplinary FMD Program:
- Collaborates closely with the Center for Women’s cardiology to treat fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) and spontaneous (non-coronary) arterial dissection
What to Expect From Your Appointment:
From diagnosis and monitoring to treatment and follow-up, we oversee every aspect of your care. Here’s what to expect:
- Before your appointment: We’ll request your medical records, including your medical history, test results and imaging (like an echocardiogram). You may also be scheduled for imaging or testing before your visit. We’ll reach out with details about your care plan and upcoming appointments.
- During your appointment: You’ll meet with a vascular medicine specialist who will evaluate your condition, review imaging and test results, determine if additional diagnostic care is needed, and answer any questions you may have.
- After your appointment: Once testing and diagnostics are complete, we’ll go over your results and outline the next steps in your care plan. This may include recommended changes recommended, further testing, referrals to specialists, etc. Your nurse will follow up with detailed instructions.
Research & Clinical Trials
- US Registry for FMD: A data repository that aims to better understand fibromuscular dysplasia and its treatment. We’re the only NC site enrolling patients in this registry.
Conferences & Symposium
- FMD Conference: Every few years, we bring together experts from the southeast region to share the latest research on FMD, discuss how to best care for FMD patients based on national and international consensus, develop new research ideas, and foster collaboration amongst FMD researchers. Insights from this conference help us deliver the best possible care.
