Eight-week paid research experience in the Department of Surgery at Atrium Health - Charlotte. Selected students will be participating in ongoing research projects, and will also have opportunities to participate in shadowing experiences, educational conferences, community-service activities, mentoring sessions, and social events.
The purpose of REACH is to increase interest in, and insight into, the rewarding career opportunities that exist in the field of healthcare for undergraduate URiM (Under-Represented in Medicine) students, and to enhance the likelihood of gaining access to careers in healthcare through direct engagement with, and mentorship by, successful medical professionals.
Undergraduate URiM* students who are currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate institution, and who are interested in a career in the healthcare field. Preference will be given to students have completed at least 2 years of college and 4 or more semesters total of science/math.
Official dates for the program are June 3 – July 26, 2024. Selected students will need to complete a comprehensive 2-4 week onboarding process prior to the June 3 start date.
The majority of REACH activities will occur on the campus of Atrium Health-Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Community-service activities will be focused on the communities we serve adjacent to our campus. Opportunities may exist to work remotely for some research-related activities, but housing, and transportation to and from Medical Center campus and community-service project sites will be the responsibility of the REACH students
Students will be compensated at an institutional rate of $17.50 per hour. Based upon an anticipated 40-hour work week, and an 8-week program, overall compensation will be approximately $5,600.
