Biography

I work to alleviate suffering by making the right diagnosis, treating with the right medications and offering support and empathy to patients and their families.

I am board certified in pediatrics and in neurology with special qualification in child neurology. I specialize in the evaluation and treatment of neurological birth defects. I strive to provide expert, compassionate care for children and their families throughout their care journey.

My areas of expertise include:

  • Evaluation and treatment of neurological birth defects
  • Child neurology
  • Pediatric neurological conditions

I serve as the division chief for the Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital Division of Child Neurology, medical director for pediatric neurology and a professor of pediatrics and neurology.

As a national leader in child neurology, I’m editor-in-chief of the Child Neurology Society’s publication, Connections, and associate editor of the Journal of Child Neurology.

I received my medical degree and doctorate from the University of Iowa. I completed residencies at the University of Virginia and the University of Iowa. I completed a fellowship at the University of Otago, where I was a Fulbright Scholar.

I’ve led numerous research studies, including those that focus on fetal alcohol syndrome and viral infections of the developing brain. I’ve received grant funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation. I have published more than 150 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.

I am married with three children. In my spare time, my family and I enjoy an active lifestyle of skiing, biking, scuba diving and rock climbing.

I look forward to caring for patients and supporting families by providing compassionate, expert neurological care.
