Dedicated to advancing medicine, we believe research is key to helping us achieve our overall vision of being the first and best choice for care. We’re creating field-expanding bench-to-bedside research to answer challenging clinical questions and implement clinical innovation throughout Atrium Health’s Musculoskeletal Institute and beyond.
Our research portfolio includes internal investigator initiated prospective and retrospective studies as well as externally funded projects from federal, industry and foundations sponsors. We also provide research training opportunities to our residents, fellows, and junior and mid-career faculty.
We’re leading the way through our research in the development and deployment of cutting-edge treatments that will shape the future standard of care. Focused on care that affects the musculoskeletal system, our current studies involve a variety of injury patterns, treatment methods and patient populations.
We are:
- One of the leaders and largest accrual sites for the Major Extremity Trauma and Rehabilitation Consortium (METRC) and have enrolled over 7,000 patients across 18 research projects funded by federal agencies
- Addressing the opioid crisis through a first-of-its-kind clinical support platform called PRIMUM (Prescription Reporting with Immediate Medication Utilization Mapping), a CDC-funded study
- The only healthcare organization in the country offering the Return to Performance Pathway program to a non-military population, which helps limb salvage patients maximize their ability to function post injury
- Creating a mobility toolkit system to capture 3D kinematic data on patients – previously only available in a gate lab – originally supported by a grant from the AO Strategy Fund; continued work has been funded by the Department of Defense to test clinical efficacy
