Hepatopancreaticobiliary Surgery Research
As part of one of the largest hepatopancreaticobiliary (HPB) surgical programs in the US, Atrium Health’s HPB researchers conduct clinical and translational research in the search for more effective ways to treat conditions involving liver, pancreas and biliary conditions. Additionally, Atrium Health is one of only three sites in the US where HBP fellows can be trained in robotic surgery techniques.
Our HPB research team works each day to develop novel approaches to HPB surgery and to empower and educate patients regarding the HPB surgical process and recovery. Our researchers also have access to a fully equipped HPB lab that supports them at every stage of their studies.
HPB Surgical Research Program Areas of Focus
Our team of internationally recognized researchers focuses on a wide variety of areas related to HPB surgery, including the following:
- Testing the elements of our Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program on outcomes within Atrium Health
- Utilizing deep learning techniques, such as software that may help avoid invasive biopsies and technology that can help patients determine whether they need to see their physician about a surgical wound
- Predictive analysis that enables HPB physicians to pre-determine outcomes, better inform patients about post-surgical issues (e.g., length of hospital stay and infection rate), and prescribe behavioral changes that will improve outcomes
- Increasing the capabilities of minimally invasive surgical techniques
- Testing new surgical technologies – including navigational ablation technology – for industry sponsors; we conduct the largest number of laproscopic microwave ablations in the country, making us a favored study site for companies looking to test technologies
