Adult Cardiovascular Medicine & Cardiovascular High Acuity Care APP Fellowship

The Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute’s Adult Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship provides Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) with the knowledge and skills to care for the growing complexity of cardiovascular patients through expert mentorship, comprehensive clinical training and immersive experiences across the continuum of cardiovascular care. This 12-month program offers two areas of focus—Cardiovascular Medicine and Cardiovascular High Acuity Care—allowing fellows to tailor their training to their career goals while developing a strong foundation in advanced cardiovascular practice.

Clinical Settings

APP Fellows gain real-time exposure to cardiovascular patient care across inpatient and outpatient settings, including specialty clinics, cardiac intensive care, diagnostic and procedural areas, and advanced cardiovascular services. Clinical experiences span preventive cardiology, heart failure, electrophysiology, structural and interventional cardiology, cardiac imaging, vascular medicine, complex inpatient cardiovascular care and cardiac intensive care.

Comprehensive Post-Graduate Approach

The Adult Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship is a 12-month program that builds upon graduate-level APP education through immersive clinical experiences, advanced didactic learning and dedicated mentorship. During the first six months, all CV Medicine APP Fellows participate in a shared cardiovascular curriculum, establishing a comprehensive foundation in the evaluation and management of cardiovascular disease. This common experience provides exposure to key cardiovascular specialties and allows fellows to develop core clinical knowledge, critical thinking and decision-making skills before advancing into their selected area of focus.

During the second six months, APP Fellows transition into pathway-specific training aligned with their career goals. Cardiovascular Medicine APP Fellows continue to develop broad expertise across ambulatory and inpatient cardiovascular care, while Cardiovascular High Acuity Care APP Fellows pursue focused training in cardiovascular intensive care.

Throughout the fellowship, APP Fellows participate in multidisciplinary education, grand rounds, research and scholarly activity, and receive dedicated mentorship from experienced cardiovascular clinicians.

Two Areas of Focus

Cardiovascular Medicine Focus

Provides broad-based training in ambulatory and inpatient cardiovascular medicine, preparing APPs for comprehensive cardiovascular practice. Rotations include general and preventive cardiology, heart failure, electrophysiology, structural heart and interventional cardiology, cardiac imaging, vascular medicine and specialty clinics.

Cardiovascular High Acuity Care

Designed for APPs seeking advanced preparation in high-acuity cardiovascular care. APP Fellows complete a shared cardiovascular curriculum during the first six months, followed by focused training in advanced heart failure and transplant, adult congenital heart disease, cardiogenic shock, mechanical circulatory support, cardiac intensive care, advanced electrophysiology and complex inpatient cardiovascular medicine. Dedicated simulation and ultrasound training further develops the hands-on skills and clinical decision-making required to care for critically ill cardiovascular patients.
