The Emergency Medicine Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship is a 12-month post-graduate program tailored to reinforce physician assistants and nurse practitioners with the skill sets and competencies fundamental to addressing a broad spectrum of clinical matters within a variety of emergency settings. Fellows gain clinical proficiency through didactics and patient care to develop the expertise needed in a fast-paced medical setting. This distinguished fellowship fosters a successful transition to practice by way of a multi-disciplinary healthcare approach among a team of accomplished healthcare providers and collaboration with other specialties.
Emergency medicine APP fellows experience interactive clinical education in the emergency department, pediatric emergency department, simulation lab and off-service rotations. The hosting clinical site, Atrium Health, is a community-based, tertiary care teaching hospital designated as the region’s only Level I trauma center. The fellow will gain experience providing care to patients each year within medical, surgical/trauma, pediatric, OBGYN, psychiatric and toxicological populations. This dynamic emergency department consists of four treatment areas: Major Treatment, Diagnostic Center, Adult and Pediatric Ambulatory Emergency Center and a Children’s Emergency Department. Advanced technology, exceptional facilities, expert providers and an innovative approach to the transformation of healthcare delivery provide graduates with the key resources to become well-rounded providers, leaders and knowledgeable resources in the area of emergency medicine.
The Emergency Medicine Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship is one of the first programs of its kind. Developed by a team of front-line providers, the curriculum advances fellows through exposure and use of such tools as didactic education, patient care, supervision of practice-specific procedures, case conferences, journal club and training in our state-of-the-art simulation center. The Department of Emergency Medicine takes pride in the history of producing top-notch clinicians and leaders through the emergency medicine physician residency programs. In conjunction with the Emergency Physician Residency Program, APP fellows participate in weekly emergency medicine block conferences to promote interdisciplinary collaboration. This comprehensive post-graduate approach offers the advantage of a guided learning experience and direct patient care while in a protected learning environment which increases confidence and in turn presents a smoother transition to practice.
