Urgent Care

Due to the growing number of patients seeking immediate care at urgent care facilities, highly skilled advanced practice providers (APPs) are needed to meet the demand. Urgent care nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) must gain the skills to efficiently provide care for complex acute illnesses and injuries while accurately making medical decisions and managing patients and resources.

The Atrium Health Urgent Care Fellowship is a 12-month program designed to train advanced practice providers in the evaluation, management and treatment of patients of all ages.

Our competency-based curriculum includes:

• Didactic lectures and participation in team learning discussions  
• Diverse clinical exposure to serve a broad range of patient populations
• Interprofessional collaboration to foster teamwork
• Evidence-based medicine to guide decision making

The urgent care fellowship allows providers to grow their skills in the fast-paced urgent care environment. With direct oversight from their APP mentors, fellows will:

• Diagnose and treat patients
• Perform EKGs, X-ray interpretations, and various procedures
• Determine appropriate follow-up care

Procedures

The APP fellow will participate in the following procedures:

• Incision and drainage
• Laceration repair
• Small joint dislocation reduction
• Casting and splinting
• Foreign body removal
• Nail plate removal
• Trephination
• Burn management

Rotations

• One- to three-month rotations through various urgent care clinics in the region
• One-month pediatric specific rotation
