ABPTRFE has granted Atrium Health Oncology Physical Therapy Residency candidacy status. Candidacy status signifies satisfactory progress toward accreditation. Achieving candidacy status is not an indication that ABPTRFE will grant initial accreditation. Participants who graduate from a program in candidacy status are not deemed to have completed an accredited program.
Our program mission is to provide a quality advanced curriculum for physical therapists in oncology to advance clinical skills and provide exceptional care to improve health, elevate hope and advance healing for oncology patients in our community. The program is dedicated to growth, continuous improvement, and strategic initiatives.
The Oncology Physical Therapy Residency is a full-time, one year program beginning January 2025. Residents will be exposed to care in Acute (Carolinas Medical Center), Inpatient Rehab (Carolinas Rehabilitation) and Outpatient (Levine Cancer Institute) settings to enhance expertise in the care continuum for oncology patients. Residents will provide patient care 36 hours per week, including four hours of one-to-one mentorship. The remaining hours are dedicated to educational activities. The resident will be a full-time employee of Atrium Health, with all associated benefits including funding for continuing education. At completion of the residency, participants will be prepared to sit for the Oncology Specialist exam through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties.
