Atrium Health Oncology Physical Therapy Residency is accredited by the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education as a postprofessional residency program for physical therapists in oncology.

Our program mission is to provide a quality advanced curriculum for physical therapists in oncology to advance clinical skills and provide exceptional care to improve health, elevate hope and advance healing for oncology patients in our community. Program Description

The Oncology Physical Therapy Residency is a full time, one year program beginning each July.  Residents will be exposed to care in Acute (Carolinas Medical Center), Inpatient Rehab (Carolinas Rehabilitation) and Outpatient (Levine Cancer Institute) settings to enhance expertise in the care continuum for oncology patients.  Residents will provide patient care 36 hours per week, including four hours of one-to-one mentorship.  The remaining hours are dedicated to educational activities. The resident will be a full-time employee of Atrium Health, with all associated benefits including funding for continuing education.  At completion of the residency, participants will be prepared to sit for the Oncology Specialist exam through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties.

Admissions Criteria

  • Graduate from CAPTE-accredited DPT program
  • North Carolina Board of Physical Therapy license (proof of license is a requirement of admission)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Must meet all eligibility requirements to be employed as a practicing physical therapist within Atrium Health
  • Strong interest in oncology patients
