Greg Hathaway

Greg Hathaway is the Area Vice President for the Spiritual Care and Education Department for the greater Charlotte region of Atrium Health. Greg received his Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte and his Master of Divinity degree in Pastoral Studies from Gardner-Webb University School of Divinity in Boiling Springs, NC. Greg is a Board-Certified Chaplain with the Association of Professional Chaplains and a Certified Educator with the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. As a faculty member of the Clinical Pastoral Education program at Atrium Health, Greg develops curriculum, teaches and clinically supervises chaplaincy interns and residents in the development of their self-awareness, self-reflection and professional practice of spiritual care skills, particularly in acute care settings. He is a life-long native of North Carolina and is the father of two adult sons. He has played guitar for over 30 years and enjoys performing in and around the Charlotte area from time to time.

Mirjam Berger

“I have been intrigued by the cultural, linguistic, spiritual and religious complexity of patients, families, staff and CPE learners across the United States. The metaphor of being a translator of these experiences who helps building bridges from unawareness and misunderstanding to curiosity and connection has been meaningful to me as a CPE educator.”

Originally from Germany, Mirjam earned her Master of Theology at Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany. She also studied theology in Chile and Cuba. She completed her Certified Educator training with Methodist Health in Houston, TX from 2001-05. Mirjam is ordained and endorsed by the United Church of Christ. Mirjam served on the ACPE Southwest and North Central Regions Accreditation and Certification Committees. Mirjam now serves as an ACPE Accreditation Commissioner. She was the convener of the Enneagram in CPE Community of Practice (CoP) from 2020-24. Since 2026, she serves as the convener of the International CPE CoP. Mirjam’s brings a sense of curiosity and creativity and has integrated Godly Play, Enneagram and Clean Language Systemic Modeling into her spiritual care practices. Mirjam is married to Michael Doane, who also is an ACPE Certified Educator. They have two adult sons.

Terri Bolotin

Terri joined the faculty full-time in 2000. She holds the bachelor's degree from St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, a Master of Divinity degree from Candler School of Theology at Emory University and a Master of Science in Organization Development from Queens University. Terri completed her Supervisory Education at Carolinas Medical Center and is an ACPE Certified Educator. Terri came to hospital spiritual care with 14 years of diverse ministerial experience, including high school teaching, adult literacy education, college campus ministry, prison visitation, parish ministry and outreach to Chicago's poor and immigrant communities. The Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa (a Roman Catholic Religious Order) endorses Terri as an Associate member to be a Spiritual Care Educator and Provider.  She serves as Secretary of the North Carolina Chaplains Association, Chair of the Rights and Responsibilities Chapter for the Central Division Accreditation Committee, Mercy Green Champion for Sustainability, Central Division Co-Chair for Access & Opportunity for ALL, a member of the Code Lavender Strategy Committee, the Central Division Ethics Committee, and is most recently engaged by the current healthcare emphasis on the Social Determinants of Health.  Working with Roof Above (an interfaith nonprofit working with unhoused people), she is leading CPE groups that serve with and learn from those in local shelters and supportive housing centers. In ACPE, Terri has served on Regional and National Certification. She has an adult son with Down syndrome, who has taught her about being present to the joy of each moment.

Bettyanna Bremer

Bettyanna attended Nazarene Bible College in Colorado Springs, CO where she graduated with a BA in Biblical Studies. She completed her graduate education at Nazarene Theological Seminary where she earned a Master of Divinity and a Certificate in Chaplaincy. Bettyanna is an ordained elder and endorsed for chaplaincy ministry by the Nazarene Church and served as senior pastor in parish ministry for twelve years. She completed her clinical pastoral education at Advocate BroMenn hospital in Bloomington/Normal, Il and worked as a staff chaplain for Great River Medical Center in Burlington, Iowa for nine years. In 2013 Bettyanna made the move to Charlotte, NC to begin Supervisory Education, and in 2014 she was hired to create a spiritual care program for Atrium Health Mindy Ellen Levine Behavioral Health Center in Davidson. She serves on the Professional Ethics Commission for ACPE. Bettyanna enjoys utilizing integrated healing therapies in her work utilizing mindfulness and meditation practices, aromatherapy, music and healing art. She and her husband, John, have two adult children and three grandchildren.

Malu Fairley-Collins

In addition to their faculty role with Atrium Health, Malu serves as the Board Chair and CPE Program Manager for Sankofa CPE Center. They are an educator with more than a decade of experience, including over five years in senior CPE leadership. Their work has included launching the inaugural CPE residency at CaroMont Health, co-chairing the Atrium Health Palliative Care and Bereavement Committee, and leading an enterprise-wide implementation of an Initial Bereavement Care Process for inpatient adult populations. Malu has also orchestrated multiple Palliative Care-focused CPE units across multi-site clinical placements. Their previous leadership and management roles have included service on ACPE’s Anti-Bias Task Force, as Endorser for the Alliance of Baptists, and as Vice President of the Alliance of Baptists Board. A proud graduate of Spelman College and Candler School of Theology, Malu spent their childhood “up top” in Washington Heights, NY, and now resides in Charlotte, NC. They are married to Ezra (he/him), and together they have three children. Malu is an avid reader, aspiring homesteader, and sci-fi enthusiast.

Chuck Godfrey

Chuck is a native of Rutherford County, NC and began as a Chaplain Resident at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in 2014. He completed residency, served as Chaplain Fellow for Levine Cancer Institute and then entered the Certified Educator Training program. He is now a Certified Educator Candidate at Atrium Health - Cleveland and a Board-Certified Chaplain. Chuck completed his undergraduate work at North Carolina State University and his Master of Divinity at Gardner-Webb University. He is an ordained Baptist minister and endorsed by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Chuck and his wife, Jessica, are parents to two daughters, Ella and Lora.

Angela began her chaplaincy journey as an intern at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in 2004. She has been the director of CPE since 2012. Angela is a Certified Educator and National Faculty with ACPE and a Board-Certified Chaplain with the Association of Professional Chaplains. A graduate of Valparaiso University, Angela earned a Master of Divinity from the University of Chicago Divinity School. She is ordained as a deacon in the Lutheran (ELCA) Church and ecclesiastically endorsed by the Order of Universal Interfaith. Angela has served on various ACPE committees, including accreditation and ethics. She has two children, Apple and Nathan.

Lisa Jeffcoat.

Now as an educator I’m grateful to engage CPE’s action-reflection process as a tool to empower our students as we learn together how to offer our best care and live our most authentic lives.”

Lisa is the Manager for Spiritual Care Residency for the Greater Charlotte Market. She earned her Master of Divinity at Yale Divinity School, Master of Arts in Teaching at Winthrop University and Bachelor of Arts in Music and English from Furman University. She completed her Certified Educator training with Atrium Health from 2013-2016. Lisa is endorsed by The Humanist Society as a Chaplain and Celebrant. She has served as an APC Certification Specialist, ACPE Pacific Region Accreditation Committee member and President of Journal of Pastoral Care Publications, Inc. Lisa brings particular passions for music that reminds her to breathe, creativity that makes life vibrant, laughter that connects and learning that liberates.

Lauren Baker Thomas.

Working with CPE students to discover how to use their gifts, experiences, and growing self-awareness to come alongside people, both in their chaplaincy work and beyond, is a new and purposeful adventure all the time for me as an educator. That is what drew me to this work and what keeps me excited for it day after day!”

Originally from Virginia, Lauren is a graduate of the University of Virginia (B.A. Computer Science, Cognitive Science) and of Duke Divinity School (M.Div.), and she has completed Clinical Pastoral Education units at the hospitals connected to both of those universities. She completed a second-year residency and three years of training as a Certified Educator Candidate at Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston, Texas. She is ordained as an Elder by the United Methodist Church. Lauren loves the outdoors, spending free time outside of work biking, hiking, and rock climbing. She and her husband, Chris, have a very spoiled puppy dog name June.

Charles Thompson

Charles has been with Atrium Health since 2018. He is a Board-Certified Chaplain with the Association of Professional Chaplaincy and Certified Educator Candidate. He earned his Master of Divinity from Shaw University and Doctor of Ministry from United Theological Seminary.  In his spare time, he enjoys walking trails, bowling, playing pool and taking in plays and concerts. He is married and father to three daughters and a son.
