It is now official that Atrium Health and Wake Forest Baptist have merged and that part of this merger will be the establishment of the first medical school in Charlotte. We are thrilled to be on the forefront of establishing a new medical school and are excited about the academic possibilities this will create for our faculty and residents.

Welcome to the Sandra and Leon Levine Adult Psychiatry Residency Program at Atrium Health - Carolinas Medical Center!

Carolina’s Medical Center (CMC) is the largest (1200 beds) of the 5 academic medical center/teaching hospitals in North Carolina and the flagship hospital for Atrium Health. It serves as the region’s only Level 1 trauma center and is an approved transplant center for heart, kidney, pancreas and liver. For decades, it has provided residency training and now trains more than 200 physicians in< 15 specialties and serves as a regional campus for Wake Forest University School of Medicine, based in Winston-Salem, NC. The Sandra and Leon Levine Psychiatry Residency program leverages the resources of this robust healthcare community as we train the psychiatrists that will care for the nearly 3 million people in our metro area.

Despite being in a huge system, our 22-resident body remains close-knit. We work together closely both on patient care as well as furthering our program’s impact in a broader sense. On the job, you’ll work closely with supervising physicians given the large amount of faculty in place to keep things moving as well as they do. This results in 1-on-1 teaching, a multitude of perspectives on how to practice, and a supportive clinical environment where residents are encouraged to push themselves to grow with careful guidance and supervision.

This more community-based style of clinical care complements the strong academic presence that continues to grow alongside the presence of Wake Forest School of Medicine Charlotte Campus. Whether you want to get involved in conducting a phase 3 clinical trial on treatment-resistant depression, host a chalk talk with a junior intern after rounds, or focus on community collaborations and volunteering, there are a myriad of ways to further yourself as a professional and physician here.
