Visiting Residents and Fellows
Learn more about completing rotations as a visiting resident or fellow at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center
Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center welcomes visiting resident rotations from other institutions to support clinical education. If you are interested in being a visiting resident or fellows and getting experience in one of our many specialties and programs, please send an email request to the Program Coordinator of the specialty you would like to rotate with.
- Rotations must be approved through the GME Rotation Request Form 90 days in advance of the anticipated start date.
- Onboarding must be completed by the 16th of the month prior to the start date.
- A $250 application fee applies, except for Enterprise internal and military applicants.
Eligibility
- Residents or fellows enrolled in a U.S.–accredited residency or fellowship program
- International medical graduates enrolled in an ACGME‑accredited program in the U.S.

Please contact the specific program you may be interested in rotating with to learn more about the possible opportunities. For general information, you may contact our GME office staff at GME@Advocatehealth.org. Rotation requests must be submitted 90 days or more in advance of the anticipated start date.
Requirements and Licenses
Any visiting resident or fellow who wishes to do a rotation at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center must provide specific documentation, including:
- Written documentation, signed by the program director of the resident’s sponsoring institution stating that said institution is continuing to cover the rotating resident’s salary, benefits and malpractice insurance during rotation.
- Verification of malpractice (e.g., certificate of insurance)
- Valid North Carolina resident training license
International Medical Graduates
The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) is the sponsoring agency for international medical graduates. The USINA (United States Immigration and Nationality Act) authorizes ECFMG to sponsor international physicians as exchange visitors (J-1 visa) in graduate medical education programs affiliated with accredited United States medical schools.
International medical graduates may also enter a School of Medicine residency or without going through the ECFMG if they have obtained a green card or have become naturalized citizens.
International medical graduates who wish to participate in rotations at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center must provide specific documentation, including:
- A valid ECFMG certificate
- A J-1 visa
- A North Carolina residency training license
