Anna Gambrell, PharmD Undergraduate Institution: Gardner-Webb University – Boiling Springs, NC Pharmacy School: Wingate University School of Pharmacy - Wingate, NC Why Atrium Health?: While a scholar student last year with Atrium Health Cabarrus, I was able to experience first-hand the culture of the pharmacy department. As a student I was consistently challenged to learn and grow through an array of opportunities but was also well supported through each endeavor. This balance between high expectations and strong mentorship created an environment where I felt confident that I would grow both clinically and professionally as a resident. I was also drawn to the collaborative dynamic between pharmacists and other healthcare providers at Atrium. Here pharmacists are truly valued as important members of the healthcare team and are involved in the direct care of patients. When applying to residency I sought a program that prioritized patient care, had a majority of rotations in the outpatient setting, supported the development of residents both as professionals and individuals, and fostered strong interdisciplinary collaboration. The more I looked the more I found Atrium to be an excellent fit, and I couldn't be more excited to be a part of this residency program. Avery North, PharmD Undergraduate Institution: University of Oklahoma - Norman, OK Pharmacy School: University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy - Oklahoma City, OK Why Atrium Health?: When searching for a first-year residency program, I prioritized those that had an ambulatory care focus, diverse array of learning experiences, and a strong residency support system. Atrium Health not only met these criteria -- it far exceeded them. From the very beginning, I have felt fully integrated in the healthcare team as an ambulatory care pharmacist. This program is designed to promote both independence and growth, while providing the mentorship and resources necessary for success. Each learning experience and longitudinal project are tailored to align with my professional interests and long-term goals, allowing me to continuously refine my clinical skills. From more common ambulatory care experiences, like diabetes, heart failure, and anticoagulation, to more specialized electives like behavioral health and specialty pharmacy, we have the opportunity to explore a wide variety of settings to prepare us for post-residency practice. Even though residency can be difficult, I have always felt supported -- not only by Paige, our Residency Program Director, but also by every pharmacist, preceptor, and provider I've worked with. This has enabled me to hone my clinical skills, explore areas of interest, and grow into the ambulatory care pharmacist I aspire to be. I am looking forward to the next year of my residency at Atrium Health Cabarrus! Mason Secrest, PharmD Undergraduate Institution: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill - Chapel Hill, NC Pharmacy School: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill - Chapel Hill, NC Why Atrium Health?: I was exposed to ambulatory care early on during pharmacy school, and I quickly realized that it encompassed a perfect mix of clinical decision making that you would experience in a traditional acute care service, as well as the patient care skills that you would gain in retail pharmacy (of which I started my pharmacy journey in). I was specifically drawn to the longitudinal relationships one was able to form with patients in this setting while also significantly contributing to a patient's health. As a fourth-year pharmacy student completing my APPE rotations, I had the opportunity to rotate through various ambulatory care clinics within Atrium Health. I also got to see some of the behind-the-scenes work within the residency program while I was on an administrative rotation with Paige Carson (RPD). I was immediately drawn to the incredible team that Atrium Health has. The culture here is extremely welcoming and supportive, and I knew that this program would foster both growth and independence as I began my pharmacy career. The abundance of opportunities was apparent early on regarding the numerous learning experiences, professional development, and research opportunities. Every pharmacist and preceptor involved in this program is very invested in your specific interests and takes every opportunity to push you to excel. I know when I finish this program, I will have gained not only the knowledge and confidence required to succeed as a clinical pharmacist, but also mentors that I can turn to for the rest of my career. I could not be happier to be a resident here at Atrium Health Cabarrus!
