Caroline Rosario Current Position: Infectious Diseases/Antimicrobial Stewardship Clinical Pharmacist – Roper St. Francis Healthcare, Charleston, SC Favorite Thing about ID PGY-2 at CMC: "My favorite parts about PGY2 ID residency at CMC program were – first, the opportunity to work closely with a large interdisciplinary ID/stewardship team comprised of ID pharmacists, ID physicians/APPs, microbiologists, infection preventionists, and data analysts - all of which were experts in their field. The framework of their stewardship program is exemplary, and the opportunity to work and learn within it gifted me with a knowledge base and skillset that I continue to be incredibly grateful for after residency. As their PGY2 ID resident, they treat you as a member of the team and in such, you are given opportunity to collaborate with each of them individually on direct patient care, protocol development, analysis of stewardship metrics, educational presentations, QI projects and research. These experiences gave me a strong knowledge base and skillset that I felt were valuable when applying for jobs after residency and continue to cherish to-date. Second - the patient population at CMC is very diverse, spanning across – transplant, oncology, pediatrics, trauma, neurosurgery, outpatient HIV clinic and 6 ICUs. Mastering ID among this population optimizes the amount you can learn within the years’ time - again expanding opportunities after residency and helping you to find your niche interests within the field. Third, and most of all favorite part - my mentors. The residency is led by ID pharmacists of ASN, all of which mentor you throughout the year in some capacity. They are some of the most caring and intelligent people I have ever met. Each of them were equally invested in my success as a resident throughout the year and each made me feel that they cared for my growth both personally and professionally. They supported me during challenges outside of residency and never turned away a request for thorough discussion of a new ID question I had. They consistently made time for me outside of residency which is more than I could have ever asked for, and I am extremely fortunate to keep in touch with them today. From a learning point of view – they love to bounce ideas off each other, and each of them have trained in difference places all over the country. Listening to their conversations and asking each of them questions allowed me to learn multiple answers/perspectives to the same ID question, and the value in collaborative learning. Having moved on to a new job opportunity after residency, I can confidently say the expertise, structure and collaboration at CMC could not have prepared me better and is something I will always cherish." |
