12-Month Comprehensive Training Experience

Our PGY2 Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Residency provides intensive clinical training through a carefully structured curriculum that balances required rotations, elective opportunities, and longitudinal experiences designed to develop expertise in emergency pharmacy practice.

Required Rotations

Orientation (4-6 weeks)

July | Carolinas Medical Center 

  • Comprehensive introduction to Atrium Health systems and policies
  • Emergency department protocols and workflows 
  • EMR training and order verification 
  • ACLS/PALS certification 
  • Baseline competency assessments

Required Longitudinal Learning Experiences

EMS Ridealong

  • Pre-hospital emergency care exposure 
  • Helicopter and ground transport experience 
  • Field treatment protocols 
  • Scene safety and triage

Medication Utilization Evaluation (MUE)

Duration: 6 months (self-paced) | Site: CMC • Quality improvement project • Data collection and analysis • Protocol development • Results presentation

ED Operational Core

Duration: 10 months | Site: CMC 

  • Every 3rd weekend (one shift per month) Clinical Shifts
  • One weekday 4-hour shift every 3 weeks Clinical Shifts
  • Maintain clinical competency 
  • Support department operations 
  • Real-world practice application

EM Medical Conference

Duration: 11 months | Site: CMC 

  • Attend Weekly
  • Present four 30-minute lectures annually 
  • Topics in emergency medicine 
  • Teaching skill development
  • Continuing education contribution

Research Project

Duration: 11 months (self-paced) With Dedicated Weeks Throughout Year | Site: CMC 

  • Original research or quality improvement 
  • IRB submission and approval 
  • Data collection and analysis 
  • Manuscript preparation 
  • Regional/national presentation
