Train at one of the region’s leading academic medical centers and the flagship hospital of Atrium Health. Residents care for a diverse patient population while learning in a high-volume, academically rich environment.
Founded in 1973, our program has a long-standing tradition of excellence in training family physicians. Fully accredited by the ACGME, we are deeply rooted in the evolution of family medicine and remain committed to shaping the future of the specialty.
Our residency offers a robust and flexible curriculum that balances inpatient and outpatient experiences. We emphasize evidence-based medicine, hands-on procedural training, and the development of strong, confident clinicians.
With training across Carolinas Medical Center, CMC Mercy, and Atrium Health Union, residents gain experience in both academic and community environments—ensuring they are well-prepared to practice in any setting.
Our faculty are deeply invested in your personal and professional growth. Through individualized mentorship and coaching, we support residents in achieving their goals—whether in clinical practice, academic medicine, or leadership.
Our faculty bring expertise across the full spectrum of family medicine, providing a comprehensive and well-rounded educational experience.
Our active research department supports resident involvement in scholarly work, including publications and presentations at regional and national levels. Areas of focus include primary care research, sports medicine, geriatrics, maternal health, LGBTQ+ care, behavioral health, and palliative care. Our affiliation with Wake Forest University further expands academic opportunities and resources.
Residents actively engage in advocacy at both the state level through the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians and nationally through the American Academy of Family Physicians. We are committed to developing physicians who will lead and advocate for the future of healthcare.
We are proud of our 100% board pass rate, reflecting the strength of our training and the preparedness of our graduates to provide high-quality, compassionate care.
Our residents are more than colleagues—they are a community. We foster a culture of collaboration and mutual support, with opportunities to connect through shared experiences, wellness initiatives, and time together both inside and outside the hospital.
