Why CMC: The people and the operative experience. When I came for a second look, everyone was incredibly welcoming and genuine. The residents all seemed to truly enjoy working together and spoke highly of the strong support they receive from leadership. On top of that, the operative experience here is second to none, with hands on opportunities that start early and build confidence. It was clear to me that this program would not only challenge me but also fully support my growth.

Why CMC: During my sub-internship, I saw the great surgical training at CMC with high-volume, high-complexity patients of all ages. I also watched our residents manage these patients with impressive autonomy and confidence. But the most important thing about this program truly is the people. There is a unique camaraderie and commitment to excellence shared by every resident and faculty member here—that's why I’m grateful to be a part of this team.

Why CMC: My very first shadowing experience was here at CMC when I was 17 years old, and I remember just being in awe of the team dynamic of all the providers and all the cool things I was able to observe. Eight years later, I returned to CMC to complete a visiting rotation as a medical student. It felt like a full-circle moment, and I had immense support from the residents and my uncle, who has been a provider at CMC for over 10 years.

Why CMC: I chose CMC first and foremost for its exceptional culture and truly supportive resident family. I also fell in love with the program’s early operative experience, graduated autonomy, comprehensive surgical training, and unique research opportunities, including the chance to work with the one-of-a-kind IRCAD facility. What also stood out to me, is the program’s immense flexibility, giving residents the freedom to shape their own path and grow in the direction that’s right for them.

I did an away rotation here and immediately knew this was the place for me. I was looking for a program that offered strong operative experience and a culture that fosters genuine support among residents. CMC stood out not only for its clinical training and mentorship but also for how approachable and invested the faculty were in resident growth.

Why CMC: After doing an away rotation here, it was clear CMC was the program I wanted to train at. It has a great clinical experience, autonomy, supportive leadership, and comradery between residents of every year. The residents are all very close and look out for each other and I think that is important to have during an intense 5 years of training.

Why CMC: I wanted to train at CMC because of the early operative experience and wonderful co-residents and attendings that I would work with. CMC is a high volume, level 1 trauma center for adult and pediatric patients. I was impressed with the autonomy and comfort that residents had while handling complex surgical patients during my sub-internship. The faculty are excellent in their support for residents with regards to both career goals and personal well-being. My co-interns are a fantastic group of people, and we have quickly become a tight knit group. Their support inside and outside of the hospital has made the transition to intern year a great one.

Why CMC: My first contact with the CMC was as the Robotic HPB fellow from 2024-2025. Since I came to CMC, I’ve learned every single day in and out of the HPB department. I had the privilege of the outstanding mentoring from Professor Martinie (my former Program Director),and receive support from all HPB staff,  General Surgery staff team, GME, HPB fellows, and all general surgery residents in the institution to chase a position as midlevel resident at CMC. I got impressed about the remarkable empathy and generosity I have received here. I’m proud to be a resident at CMC pursuing excellence by principle. This is the place to stay, to belong as part of big surgical family.

Why CMC: CMC has a community culture and many opportunities for exploration of my surgical interests. After residency, I will serve as a General Surgeon at an Indian Health Services or Tribal healthy facility, so it was important that I train at a residency that would prepare me well for this career. CMC is an excellent institution with a proven record of graduating general surgeons well prepared to enter practice after residency. But ultimately it was the people! By the end of my interview, this just felt like the place I was meant to spend 5 challenging years in training.

Why CMC: When looking for a residency I knew I wanted a program that had a culture of operating early, with strong resident autonomy, and exposure to a wide variety of surgical pathology. I also wanted a residency that would either prepare me to excel in any fellowship that I decided to pursue or give me the tools to succeed in General Surgery practice. While CMC checked all those boxes for me, what sold me was the great interactions between the residents and faculty during my interview day and dinner. This is a truly collegial program that strongly invests in their residents' education and growth and gives them an immense amount of support from all levels. I could not imagine training anywhere else.

Why CMC: I had the opportunity to work on a research project with several of the surgeons at CMC during my undergrad summers and they left a lasting impression on me. Everyone was incredibly kind and eager to help. The residents were strong leaders and clearly saw each other as family, from interns to chiefs. While rotating in Charlotte as a fourth-year medical student I was impressed by the operative volume and high level of autonomy given to the residents by attendings. The location is also stellar; Charlotte is a great city with plenty to do. I can’t think of any better place to be for residency!

After being a part of a team my entire life through basketball, I knew I needed that in a residency program, and that is exactly what I found here at CMC. I have the most supportive group of co-residents who genuinely strive to take care of one another every day. Furthermore, the female mentorship here is strong, which is crucial for women in surgery. Lastly, CMC has a prominent history of placing its residents into top fellowship programs across the country, so my interests of cardiothoracic surgery and surgical oncology, whatever I end up deciding, are well within reach!

Why CMC: I completed an away rotation during my 4th year of medical school and can honestly say that CMC had a completely different feel than anything I had experienced in surgery. The culture of the program is unmatched. All of the residents interacted together and any level resident could talk directly to a chief. There was a culture of hard work and excellence. Everyone was happy and genuinely loved what they were doing and the surgeons they were becoming. The training, different complexity levels, and volume of cases are second to none. Charlotte is a wonderful city that continues to grow and offers so many different activities, breweries and restaurants.
