Salary and Benefits for Internal Medicine ResidentsDuring the 2025-2026 academic year, salaries for House Staff in the Graduate Medical Education Programs at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center are as follows:

  • PGY-1 $70,528

Benefits

Scholarly Expense Allowance

CME maximum allowance of $2200 per academic year. Up to five days per academic year for CME meetings.

Health Insurance Plans

For calendar year 2025, Atrium Health offers two health plan options for teammates (residents and fellows) to select from. Health insurance coverage begins on the resident/fellow physicians first day of employment and must be renewed annually by the trainee during open enrollment. Health insurance will continue through the final day of residency or fellowship training. Option 1: LiveWell Health Savings Plan with a savings account (HSA): Coverage provided for residents/fellows and eligible dependents/spouse with premium paid by Atrium Health* Option 2: LiveWELL Health Co-Pay Plan with spending account (FSA): Coverage provided for residents/fellows and eligible dependents/spouse. The plan has a significantly subsidized biweekly premiums paid by the resident/fellow.

Dental Insurance

Coverage provided for residents and eligible dependents/spouse with $1500 maximum per person, per calendar year. Premiums are paid by employer. Annual deductible of $50 per person, $150 per family and co-pays are paid by teammate.

Vision Insurance

Vision Insurance is offered for residents and eligible dependents/spouse. Premiums are paid by the resident.

Medical, Family, Maternity, Parental & Caregiver Leave

Per the Graduate Medical Education Leave Policy and Atrium Health Policy HR 4.09 Paid Medical, Family/Maternity/Parental and Caregiver leave available in keeping with ACGME policy, eligible day one of employment.

Professional Liability Insurance

Residents and Fellows have full coverage while functioning in the role of a house officer. External moonlighting activities are not covered.

Life Insurance

Employer provides term life insurance equal to 1 times annual salary for teammate only.

Disability Insurance

Coverage (Short-Term and Long-Term) begins on the first day of orientation. *Pre-existing exclusions apply to disability plans.

401(k)

Contributions: Teammates have the potential to receive 7 - 8% in Atrium Health contributions.

  • After three months of service, you automatically will be enrolled in the Atrium Health 401(k) Retirement Savings Plan at a pretax contribution rate of 3% of eligible compensation.
  • These contributions will be matched by Atrium Health based on how much you contribute.
  • Atrium Health matches your contribution on each paycheck in which you make a contribution – up to limits determined by the IRS. Catch-up contributions are not matched.
Lab Coats

You will receive 3 lab coats in your first year of training. One lab coat is allowed each subsequent academic year and can be ordered by your program coordinator. Laundry services are provided at no charge.

Meals

Meal points are provided quarterly for use in the hospital cafeterias and Starbucks Coffee®.

Moonlighting

  • PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents are allowed to moonlight assuming program director approval of the activity.
  • There is a popular voluntary moonlighting opportunity available.
Parking

Free covered and reserved parking for residents.

Social Events

  • Resident holiday dance
  • Formal graduation banquet
  • New intern welcome party
  • Resident social committee
  • Numerous departmental activities throughout the year (e.g. picnics, dinners)
  • Intramural sports teams such as softball and kickball
  • Weekly trivia team

Vacation

Categorical PGY-1 year

20 weekdays (i.e. 4 weeks) of vacation.

Typically, 5 of these days are used at either Christmas or New Year's.

Preliminary PGY-1 year

20 weekdays (i.e. 4 weeks) of vacation.

Typically, 5 of these days are used at either Christmas or New Year's.

Prelim interns are also allowed moving time ~June 24-June 30.

PGY-2 year

20 weekdays (i.e. 4 weeks) of vacation.

Typically, 5 of these days are used at either Christmas or New Year's.

In addition, residents are allowed one week of CME time for an educational trip in the Continental US, for which tuition and expenses up to $2,200 are provided.

PGY-3 year

20 weekdays (i.e. 4 weeks) of vacation.

Typically, 5 of these days are used at either Christmas or New Year's.

PGY-3 residents are also allowed moving time from ~June 24-June 30.

Residents are also allowed one week of CME time for an educational trip in the Continental US, for which tuition and expenses up to $2,200 are provided.
All PGY years

Residents have additional scheduled 'wellness' days off during elective rotations for common activities such as car maintenance, haircuts, etc.

401(k) Matched Savings Plan

Eligibility: Team members with 16 standard hours (or more) weekly.

Basic contribution: Each year, Atrium Health contributes 2% of your pay to your account, regardless of whether you save through the plan.

Matching contribution: When you save through the plan, Atrium Health matches: 75% of the first 4% of pay that you save and 50% of the next 2% of pay that you save, making the total maximum match 4% of your pay. To receive the full 4% match, you must save 6% of your pay through the plan.

Performance Based contribution: This contribution is based on System performance, similar to the Performance Plus program. When we meet certain targets, your account can receive an additional contribution, based on your service.

Continuing Education [CE]

Salary and Benefits for Internal Medicine Residents

$2,200 in scholarly activities funds are provided each academic year which may be used for:

  • Educational trips in the Continental US
  • Medical/dental professional dues/memberships
  • Medical/dental texts/periodicals/journal subscriptions/software applications
  • Registration for USMLE exams and Board Certification exams
    • Registration fees for board certifications are limited to $500
    • USMLE exams are limited to $1,000
  • Approved Medical/dental equipment – $500 limit
  • Scrubs not to exceed $200
  • Purchase of an iPad or other electronic device that is compatible with Atrium Health technologies (EMR) – $500 limit – see below
    • This is a one time purchase for the length of training
    • The funds for this device are taxable under federal guidelines
    • Using this device, resident may seamlessly connect to the hospital network and electronic medical record which makes patient rounding even more efficient
