A Message from the Program Director

Thank you for your interest in Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center Residency Program in Obstetrics and Gynecology! I am proud of our exceptional group of faculty and residents, and I invite you to learn more about our program.  

We attract educators and learners from all over the country with a variety of clinical and research interests. Our faculty interests include family planning, pediatric and adolescent gynecology, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, and medical education through simulation. Our faculty include widely renowned subspecialists in Maternal and Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, and Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery. Thus, the depth and breadth of pathology and surgical procedures experienced by our residents is truly phenomenal. We pride ourselves on the approachable and collegial nature of our faculty who are quick to provide advice and encouragement to our residents. Our mentor program also assigns each incoming resident to a faculty mentor who provides professional and personal guidance throughout residency.  

We strive to recruit the most talented, caring, and diverse group of people to join our incoming class, and we do this through holistic applicant review and consideration of a person’s pathway to medicine, work experience, volunteerism, and advocacy work. Our residents come from divergent backgrounds and career goals, but they share the same values: working as a team, helping each other succeed, and taking care of each other and themselves. Each year residents complete impressive research projects, which are frequently accepted to national and international meetings as oral or poster presentations and result in publication. In addition to the robust daily clinical experience, residents advance their knowledge and skills through weekly didactics, morbidity, mortality, and improvement conferences, journal clubs, simulation labs, and robotic training. We have longitudinally integrated healthcare disparities, social determinants of health, and wellness/wellbeing topics into our core curriculum. Our residents view each other as family and reinforce their bonds through the Big-Little mentorship program, book club, and social events hosted by the Wellness Committee. At the end of our four-year program, our residents are prepared to practice independently or pursue fellowship training with the goal to enhance women’s health care and contribute to our field of medicine.
